Frodo - they may have moved!
Greg Czechura – Monday, September 22, 08 (02:38 pm)
I have just received a report of a pair of Peregrines being very active around a building close to Admiralty Towers. The initial report suggests that they are defending the top of this building - not good news for Frodocam. Equally the pair may simply be engaging is courtship display. The location of the building indicates that the pair is likely to be F&F. The report is being investigated and I will publish details as they come to hand.
Frodo & Frieda - something else to consider
Greg Czechura – Monday, September 22, 08 (12:56 pm)
I have just been looking at the camera feed. Still nothing happening. It is 1:15 PM local time and the ledge is almost fully shadowed which prompts me to wonder if we are looking at of one the environmental changes that I referred to in my previous post. Frodocam watchers in previous seasons have often expressed concern about how exposed Frieda and the chicks were to the mid-day and afternoon sun, although this never proved to be a problem. It would be ironic if shading of the ledge has forced them to nest elsewhere. We have experienced a couple of afternoon storms of late and I am not sure if they have influenced F&F’s timing and location of nest-site (NB The Hilton pair’s nest site is less exposed to the elements).
Frodo & Frieda - Where are they?
Greg Czechura – Monday, September 22, 08 (12:16 pm)
We have been getting occasional visits to the ledge but otherwise things are still very quiet. The Hilton pair have just started to breed and traditionally they have always been 1-2 weeks ahead of F&F in their timing.

I must confess to being a bit concerned now.
On my last visit, I did see one Peregrine in the air across the Brisbane River above Kangaroo Point. It looked like a male (Frodo). He eventually disappeared off to the east (possibly hunting). Sadly, this sighting did not tell me much about what is happening at the Towers.
The occasional visits to the ledge were consistent with pre-breeding behaviour, but the number of visits seem to have decreased rather than increased in frequency. This may suggest that something has changed and that Frieda may no longer regard the ledge as a suitable nest site. Given that F&F have always bred a couple of weeks later than the Hilton pair, I would suggest that if F&F are going to breed on the Towers this year something should happen by the second week of October at the latest.
It is quite possible that on-going construction activity in the city blocks surrounding the Towers has caused some sort of environmental change (wind patterns, shading, noise & light) that renders the ledge less suitable this year. Alternatively, a new building that has gone up since the last breeding season may be even more Peregrine friendly!

Apologies for being a bit tardy in replying to questions. Unfortunately, I have been engaged on other work commitments as well as trying to track the pair down. They are still in the immediate area and appear to have a new nest-site but its exact location is unknown.

A number of new high-rise buildings have been constructed in the immediate vicinity of Admiralty Towers in the last 3-4 years. Two of the new ones, Aurora Towers and Riparian Plaza, seem to have attracted the attention of F&F. Significantly, both are taller than Admiralty Towers. Observations from some Frodo watchers, birders and myself indicate that there is Peregrine activity around both.
At the moment, it would seem that Aurora Towers is being used as a roost and a conspicuous high perch by Frodo. A colleague has gained access to the roof when Frodo was in residence. There was no nest-site defensive behaviour forthcoming from him and there were only a couple of discarded prey items present (lorikeets) present. Frodo was singularly unconcerned with the two human visitors. This strongly suggests (from past experience) that no nest is present here.
So far, it has not been possible to gain similar access to the roof of Riparian Plaza for a number of reasons. Observatios have to be conducted from the ground and at present these are inconclusive - they could represent visits by Frodo to an incubating Frieda or just visits to another perch/roost.
At least one of the pair does make occasional visits to Admiralty Towers but these are short and indicate that AT is now being usued as a perch or even occasional feeding station. This ties in with what we were seeing a little while ago.
Anyway, it looks like most local Peregrines are breeding during September-October this year. At least, I got this correct!
